BugEra is a producer of novel Black Soldier Fly (BSF) strains; The BSF larvae upcycles organic waste to protein and oil sold for animals and pet feed. By using patent-pending BSF genetic engineering platform we enable the expansion of insect farming to new and huge markets: profitable, novel, and highly sustainable biomass for the  the biofuel industry and novel biopesticides which are, specifically targeted and biodegradable.

The hero of our story - The Black Soldier Fly (BSF)

BSF is a magnificent and harmless insect. It upcycles organic waste (substrate) from almost any origin into valuable protein, high-quality oil, and fertilizer used today mainly for farm animals (cattle, poultry, etc), aquaculture and pet feed markets.

BSF is both a unique biorefinery and a bioreactor.

In the last decade, BSF was domesticated and commercialized for industrial use. It is grown by modern, hi-tech farms, which recycles up to 250 tons of organic waste a day into the oil and protein

The need

Governments and corporations globally are seeking to reduce the use of petroleum fuels to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Biomass-based fuels (biofuel) decrease GHG by as much as 80% but are dependent on unsustainable oil crops like soy, corn, and palm that are also used for feed. In addition, the demand for biofuel will increase by 5 times by 2024 while the price of crop-based biomass has doubled in the last two years.

To summarize the biofuel industry requires a sustainable, nonfood, cost effective biomass for biofuel.

 The problem

While BSF oil composition is a perfect fit for biofuel, it is not profitable due to the low BSF oil volume.

The solution

BugEra utilizes multiple, advanced genetic editing & genetic modification techniques to create the patent-pending Modified Black Soldier Fly (M-BSF) platform. The platform will enable the development of multiple strains for multiple markets.

Within 18 months we will develop 2 strains based on M-BSF platform, the first stain will tackle the biofuel need by doubling or more the BSF oil volume without affecting the other BSF traits thus making it profitable for the biofuel markets

The benefits:

  • To BSF farms
    • Double oil volume with the same composition & without affecting protein composition and volume
    • Open new market, increase profitability and reduce expenses
    • Increase organic waste recycling and allow new substrates utilization
    • Rear from day 1 – our strain needs an identical environment as the wild-type strain
  • To Biofuel industry
    • Proven high-quality raw material for biofuel
    • Price competitive feedstock
    • More sustainable biomass – significantly less nature resource and much better carbon footprint
    • Elastic Supply with the potential to ease up volatile pricing

Market size and business model

BSF farming companies are BugEra's customers.
The BSF Market is expected to triple to $3.4B by 2030 with a CAGR of 34%.

There are more than 50 BSF farming companies globally, with APAC as the leading region.

The biomass-based fuel market will grow from $30B to $45B by 2025 due to increasing demand which generates a $15 billion opportunity for the BSF industry

BugEra's will exercise royalties or license models with BSF farms based on their revenues from the refineries.
